American cyclist Kristen Faulkner pulled off a stunning victory in the 2024 Olympic women's road race, breaking away with three kilometers to go to secure a historic win for the United States.

Faulkner, who had been part of a leading group throughout the race, made her move with just over three kilometers remaining. She attacked up a small climb, leaving her rivals behind and powering to the finish line solo.

The 28-year-old's victory marks the first time an American woman has won the Olympic road race since 1984. It is also the first gold medal for the United States in cycling at the 2024 Games.

Faulkner's win was a major upset, as she was not considered one of the favorites heading into the race. However, she proved that she was more than capable of rising to the occasion and delivering a performance for the ages.
