Almost Half of US Adults Have High Cholesterol

Survey Reveals 40% of Adults Unaware of Condition

Millions of Americans At Risk for Heart Disease

Roughly 40% of adults in the United States have high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol, according to a recent survey.

The survey, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that among those with a cholesterol level of 160 mg/dL or higher, nearly half (49%) were unaware of their condition and were not receiving treatment.

High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. LDL cholesterol can build up in the arteries, forming plaques that narrow the vessels and restrict blood flow to the heart.

The CDC recommends that adults over 20 have their cholesterol levels checked every five years. If your cholesterol levels are high, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise, or medication to lower your risk of heart disease.
