The Vancouver Canucks Have a New Captain
Quinn Hughes Named 15th Captain in Franchise History
The Vancouver Canucks have a new captain. Quinn Hughes, the 23-year-old defenseman, was named to the role on Monday, becoming the 15th captain in franchise history.
Hughes has been with the Canucks since 2019, when he was drafted seventh overall. He has quickly become one of the team's most important players, and his leadership qualities have been evident both on and off the ice.
"Quinn is a natural leader," said Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin. "He's a great communicator, he's always positive, and he leads by example. We're confident that he's the right person to lead this team going forward."
Hughes is the first defenseman to captain the Canucks since Mattias Ohlund from 2008 to 2011. He is also the youngest player to captain the team since Trevor Linden was named captain at the age of 21 in 1990.
Hughes will be tasked with leading the Canucks back to the playoffs after they missed out last season. The Canucks have not won a playoff series since 2011, and they have not reached the Stanley Cup Final since 1994.
Hughes is confident that he can lead the Canucks to success. "I'm honored to be named captain of this team," he said. "We have a great group of guys here, and I'm excited to get to work and help us reach our goals."
